| Donat, le père de Rolland, partit pour
l'Angleterre deux mois après sa naissance et fut tué 9 mois plus tard,
en juillet 1917. En 1920, sa mère Marie-Louise se remaria et confia le
soin de Rolland à ses grands-parents maternels, Alexandre et Sophranie
Primeau, vivant alors sur une ferme près d'Orléans (Ontario). Ce fut là
et, après la mort d'Alexandre, à Ottawa que grandit Rolland. Il compléta
son cours secondaire puis une formation supplémentaire qui lui conféra
un diplome d'enseignant. Il enseigna une seule année dans une école
rurale d'Orléans mais, ce métier n'étant pas à son goût, remplit des
emplois divers avant d'être engagé à l'usine de contreplaqué que la Compagnie Internationale de Papier du Canada (CIP) ouvrit à Gatineau aux
début des années 40. |
Donat, Rolland's father, left for
England two month after Rolland's birth and was killed 9 months later,
in July 1917. In 1920, his mother, Marie-Louise, re-married and left
Rolland in the care of his maternal grandparents, Alexandre and Sophranie Primeau,
who lived on a farm near Orléans (Ontario). This is where, and then,
after Alexandre's death, in Ottawa that Rolland grew up. He graduated
from high school and completed additional education to obtain his
teaching certificate. He taught for a year in a rural school in Orleans
but this profession did not suit him and he worked at various jobs
before he was hired at a plywood mill built by the Canadian International
Paper Company (CIP) in Gatineau at the beginning of the 40's. |
| Henrietta, "Etta", grandit à
Rivière-du-Loup puis à Matane avant de déménager à Ottawa en 1933
lorsque son père entra dans la Gendarmerie Royale Canadienne. Ayant
terminé ses études, elle travailait comme secrétaire à Ottawa
lorsqu'elle rencontra Rolland. Il se marièrent à Ottawa en 1942 et
déménagèrent à Aylmer près de Gatineau. A l'usine, Rolland s'engage dans
l'action syndicale et est élu représentant syndical pour son atelier.
Cette activité le signale à la direction de l'usine qui lui offre une
position dans le services des relations industrielles à l'usine de
papier journal de la CIP à Gatineau. L'opportunité séduit le jeune
syndicaliste qui dès lors met son talent de négociateur au service du
patronat |
Henrietta, "Etta", was raised in
Rivière-du-Loup and then in Matane before moving to Ottawa in 1933 when
her father joined the RCMP. Having completed her secondary education,
she was working as a secretary in Ottawa when she met Rolland. They married
in 1942 and moved to Aylmer, near Gatineau. At the plywood mill, Rolland
was active in the Union and was elected shop Stewart. This activity
brought him to the attention of management who offered him a position in
the industrial relations services at the CIP paper mill in Gatineau. The
young union man seized this opportunity and put his talents as a
negotiator at the service of management. |
| En 1948, Rolland est transferé à la
direction du personnel de l'usine de cellulose d'Hawkesbury (Ontario) où
le suivent Etta et ses deux filles, Louise et Andrée. La troisième fille,
Francine, nait à Hawkesbury. En 1952, Rolland est nommé Gérant du
personnel pour l'usine de papier journal de la CIP à Trois-Rivières. La
famille y demeurera jusqu' en 1960, date à laquelle Rolland devient
Directeur des Relations Industrielles au bureau-chef de la CIP à
Montréal. En 1971, il se retire dans sa maison de campagne à l'Orignal,
près de Hawkesbury mais continue à travailler comme consultant pour la
CIP et plusieurs autres compagnies locales. |
In 1948, Rolland was transferred to the
personnel office at the cellulose mill in Hawkesbury where the family,
Etta and her two daughters, Louise and Andrée relocated. Their third
daughter, Francine was born in Hawkesbury. In 1952, Rolland was promoted
to Personnel Manager for the Newspaper Mill of CIP in Trois-Rivières.
The family stayed there until 1960, when Rolland became
Director of Industrial Relations at CIP's Headquarters in Montreal. In
1971, he retired in his summer home in l'Orignal where he continued to
work as a consultant for CIP and other local enterprises. |
| Etta meurt d'un cancer généralisé en
août 1975. Rolland continue ses activités de consultant et voyage
fréquemment aux USA, en Europe et en Afrique. Il meurt durant son
sommeil le 6 novembre 1986 dans sa maison de l'Orignal. |
Etta died of cancer in August 1975.
Rolland continued to work as a consultant and traveled frequently in the
USA, Europe, and Africa. He died in his sleep on November 6, 1986 in
his home in l'Orignal. |
